NAHQ Competency Framework Updates Complete; Reflections on Maturity for Field of Healthcare Quality
Many of the organizations I speak with are navigating the same challenge: healthcare quality priorities and pressures have evolved dramatically, yet teams are often operating without a standardized, competency‑based foundation to meet evolving expectations.
That gap is what NAHQ sought to address when we introduced the Healthcare Quality Competency Framework™ in 2016.
The Framework was created to establish healthcare quality as a discipline and profession grounded in defined competencies rather than locally created job titles, organizational structures or individual interpretations of quality work. The framework is a validated model which defines the knowledge, skills and behaviors required to implement and advance healthcare quality and patient safety across enterprise-care roles and across the continuum of care.
Industry Adoption and Impact
Since its introduction, the Framework has become widely accepted as the industry standard. It has been twice‑validated, adopted by higher‑education programs, integrated into health systems across the continuum of care, and endorsed by Joint Commission.
It is also the foundation of NAHQ’s professional development offerings, most notably:
- Micro-Credentials
- Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality® (CPHQ), and
- Workforce Accelerator - the program that quantified the return on investment gained from investing in a quality‑driven workforce, which we refer to as ROI‑Q.
Why the Framework Needed to Evolve
Since the Framework launched, professionals are navigating rapid regulatory shifts, expanding public reporting, and higher expectations for safety and experience, while navigating workforce gaps, financial strain, and increasing system complexity.
That’s why we are announcing enhancements to the Framework.
What’s New in the Enhanced Framework
The enhanced Framework retains its eight competency domains while updating competency statements and skills to better reflect modern quality practice, including patient experience, population health, and equitable care.
These updates reflect how quality work is performed today:
- Integrated across functions
- Embedded in daily operations
- Aligned with organizational strategy
- No longer treated as episodic or purely compliance‑driven
A Defining Moment for the Quality Profession
The enhanced Framework represents an important moment of reflection for the profession and discipline of quality.
It signals that healthcare quality has reached a level of maturity where evolution is about refinement: strengthening what works, clarifying what matters, preparing the workforce for what lies ahead, and supporting industry‑wide adoption.
There is a roadmap to healthcare Quality excellence. NAHQ can help you follow it.
The NAHQ Healthcare Quality Competency Framework™ serves as the industry-standard, defining the Quality Safety competencies, skills and behaviors required to advance Quality & Safety excellence across the healthcare continuum.
This expert-created, data-informed framework is continuously validated and updated by NAHQ to ensure it provides the most up-to-date information, guiding professionals, organizations, and the healthcare industry to create a competent, coordinated workforce prepared to deliver healthcare excellence.
